DR. L. RICHARD MORGAN: The first implants that were put in in the way of silicone was 1964. So we had many years of experience with that. But in 1990, there was a question made about the safety of the silicone. So they gathered data over many years to finally prove that the silicone was safe. In the meantime, we were using saline and it worked out very well. There's a 3-to-5 percent chance of leakage. But they turned out very well. But the silicone is still probably the nicest.
However, because of that long period, there's a lot of people that still have some concerns and therefore, we do both procedures. One of the areas that the saline really shines is if you have a disparity or people are not sure of the size they could have, you can put the saline in, leave the tubes in and the next day, you can fill them while they're awake and they can then choose the volume that they want, which is kind of a nice feature.
